Mick O’Malley from O’Malley Fitness has been a huge supporter of the Surf Coast Trek since the first trek in 2016! And this year is no different!
Mick has worked for the Geelong Football Club and run fitness programs for the Western Bulldogs, Hawthorn Football Club and across the AFL. He also has an extensive career as a professional boxer and was the first Australian in 24 years to win a Commonwealth title on foreign soils as well as the first Australian ever to win two national titles in the same year.
Mick was introduced to Kids Plus more than 10 years ago and has been a huge supporter ever since.
The free 10 week training for Trekkers with thanks to O’Malley Fitness is starting soon so we thought now was a great time to give you some of Mick’s tips for your training.
Mick’s first tip?… Start slow and easy.
Walk out the door, walk 15 minutes, and walk back. Yep…that’s it. Do this every day for a week. Of course if you are doing this as a matter of course anyway then great! Just remember to not overdo it too early as you may end up with overuse injuries later.
Adding some core and leg exercises to your routine is also beneficial.
As the weeks wind down to the Trek, lengthen the distance of your hikes. And do it with your friends! The support and camaraderie is a great motivator to keep you moving.
Stretching is also a vital part of your training. Try to make sure you find some time before, and after your training hikes to give your muscles some love.
