One of our favourite things about the Surf Coast Trek is the community that surrounds it, with many trekkers that take part strengthening old friendships and making new ones along the way.
We’re excited to be announcing our 2020 Surf Coast Trek Champions who live and breath everything the Trek stands for. So without further ado, get to know Trek Champion Ali Brennan from Sweatworking Geelong.
How did you first hear about the Trek and what made you decide to take part?
My lovely gal pals Stampsy and Flick told me all about it early in 2019 and straight after the conversation I went and signed myself up! 2019 was all about challenging myself and trying new things AND supporting wonderful local organisations and causes – so taking on the Trek was a no brainer!
What do you love about it?
What’s not to love? I was blown away by the scenery from the moment we scaled the first hill in Aireys Inlet and we got our first glimpse of the coastline. An INCREDIBLE way to watch the sunrise and lead us into the 40km’s that lay ahead. I LOVED the changing scenery as we progressed along the track and the spirit of friendship and community feel of the day. I loved how positive and determined trekkers were and the feeling of accomplishment that washes over you as you cross the finish line (particularly after passing by the 500 metre, 400 metre, 300 metre, 200 metre, 100 metre to the finish line signs that actually feel like they go on FOREVER!) and the proud and humbling feeling that comes from knowing just how capable you are and how purposeful what you have just achieved is. Knowing we completed a challenge with a MUCH higher purpose of supporting two organisations who do such wonderful things for our community is one of the best feelings in the world.
What advice would you give to new trekkers?
Think you can’t do it? You absolutely CAN! If you’re looking for a challenge that fills you with a sense of purpose and you enjoy pushing yourself to see what you are capable of – this is the perfect opportunity! Hydration Packs are a necessity, keep your packs light and load up on snacks (bananas and Kit Kats! Yum!) at each break point! Sunscreen and hats are a non-negotiable. TRAIN! And make sure you incorporate hill climbs, soft sand and stairs in those preparation hikes! Take advantage of every loo stop! (Trust me!). Stop every now and then and take it all in! The scenery is just something else! Oh and high tail it on the soft sand! The sooner you get that S.O.B stretch over and done with, the better!
What’s the first thing you’ll do after completing the Surf Coast Trek 2020?
Taking my shoes off and walking directly to Fishermans Beach to get in the water! Rookie mistake not doing that last year! The old hips and quads took a punishing last year and let’s just say the epsom salt bath just didn’t cut it for recovery!
