Mick O’Malley is a former professional Australian boxing champion, having won both state and national titles. Mick overcame many challenges to reach the title of world no. 3. Today, we’re excited to announced Mick as an ambassador of the Surf Coast Trek in 2019 and share his passion helping others achieve their fitness and sporting goals.
What made you initially decide to come on board the Surf Coast Trek?
Simply I thought it was a fantastic organisation and event.
Did you know about the work of Give Where You Live and Kids Plus before taking on the Trek?
I was introduced to Kids Plus by a friend almost 8 years ago and thought it was a great organisation and have been doing some charity work with them ever since.
What do you love most about supporting the Trek?
People getting out raising money, awareness, giving support to the charity whilst getting fit at the same time.
Given you’ve trekked with us a few times, what’s the atmosphere of the day like?
Exciting, social and a sense of community.
How do you find the experience of the day itself?
Fun, rewarding and a great feeling of accomplishment—both individually and for Kids Plus.
What’s your best tip for those preparing for the Trek for the first time?
Get out and start walking. Walk for time, start slow and increase weekly.
What should trekkers do to make the most of the day?
Walk within your abilities not anyone else’s, enjoy the scenery and have fun.
What’s your favourite part of the Trek?
The people.
